I will go into this as if you were a complete newb.
Hmm...where to begin...well i couldn't tell you what a SW session would be like as i have never played SW...Rifts on the other hand in general is hard to explain for a session as well sice there are SOOOO many variables for such a thing.
Rifts itself is a post post-apocalyptic setting with very high technology, including things like cyborgs, combat robots, man sized power armours, etc, but also magic along with psychic powers. Monsters are very real as are just about any number of things. The world is no longer what we know. Nations of today are long gone, replaced by the survivors own idealogical based nations from all inclusive to quite xenophobic and restrictive. Even the geography of the earth was transformed after the great cataclysm that brought about the apocalypse.
As for Meta.....it is 110PA (roughly 2400 AD), the Coalition is the dominant force in North America with a number of secondary nations filling in the gaps. The the New German Republic has driven a massive wedge through the Gargoyle Empire itself as well as with it's ally the Brodkil Empire. Now however the Demon wars have come to earth with the realm of Hades and the realm of Dyyval battling over who will control Earth and it's magic rich resources. It is the event that thus far is showing that it may be the thing that unites everyone in a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" way, even if only temporarily.
